SAN FRANCISCO, Mar. 7, 2006 ñ Company Chaddick contemporary dance company, known for their "visceral exuberance" (San Francisco Bay Guardian) and Artistic Director Cheryl Chaddick's range of witty, meditative, humorous and contemplative choreography, announced today the world premiere of Landslide, an evening-length, site specific work designed for the company's home season, May 5-20 at Danzhaus in San Francisco. These performances mark Company Chaddick's 21st anniversary season.

In Landslide Chaddick probes questions of perception such as: Is beauty ugly or can ugliness be beautiful? Do we see only what we want to believe and how does this influence our relationships with others? Chaddick observes, "People and situations are like icebergs, we only see about a tenth of what is there. The rest is hidden under water." Landslide will feature music by Thomas Newman, Psapp, Schola Cantorum and others.

Performances take place in the unique and malleable venue known as Danzhaus, a converted warehouse located in San Francisco's Potrero Hill district. The performance will occur throughout the space, transforming it into a kind of live action gallery and creating a carnival-like atmosphere. Chaddick explains, "We selected Danzhaus as our venue this year because I wanted to collaborate with rooms and environments. I wanted my imagination to be stretched," she says. "I wanted to be inspired by light, color and architectural angles along with erratic feeling and non linear thoughts." The new work also features the use of masks, enabling the choreographer to suggest changing or ambiguous identities and realities.

The eight dancers of the company are Chaddick, Blane Ashby, Melissa Crawford, Sriba Kwadjovie, Pete Litwinowicz, Lorevic Rivera, Lise Worthen, and founding member Jennifer Wright, who with this season celebrates 21 years with Company Chaddick.

Chaddick has choreographed over 50 works for her company and toured with them throughout the Pacific Northwest. A celebrated and popular teacher for two decades, she has been on faculty of the San Francisco Dance Center since 1991. Prior to establishing Company Chaddick, she performed with the Eugene Ballet, Zaccho Dance Theater, San Francisco Moving Company and Repertory Dance Company. She is also certified as a Pilates instructor and massage therapist.

Chaddick's choreographic inspirations spring from the joys, agonies and ordinariness of modern life. Her themes have ranged from spiritual crisis (Batter My Heart) to the rawness of addiction (Dragons), from the biorhythms of life (Inner Springs) to the challenging world of corporate politics (Hard Drive). Works such as these, which reflect the experiences of the dancers, the audience and the community, have distinguished Company Chaddick since its inaugural appearance in San Francisco in 1985. She has collaborated with such artists as filmmaker, director, illustrator and animator Ed Bell and sculptor/painter Christopher Carter.

Through the years Company Chaddick has received funding support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund/Grants for the Arts, California Arts Council, San Francisco Arts Commission, Community Futures Foundation, and the Peninsula Community Foundation, and matching grants from Charles Schwab and Microsoft, Inc.

Company Chaddick will perform Landslide, an evening-length site specific work, Friday, May 5 through Saturday, May 20 at Danzhaus, located at 1275 Connecticut St. (at Cesar Chavez), in San Francisco. Performances are twice nightly at 8 pm and 9:30 pm Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets are $20 general admission. For reservations, call 415/435-7569.
